Greek Restaurants Near Kensington: Museum Week

  • What’s on
  • Posted 16 hours ago

Greek restaurants near Kensington are about to be very useful, because the museum quarter around Exhibition Road has its biggest week of the autumn. Freddie Mercury’s stage costumes go on free display at the V&A from Saturday 24 October, the Science Museum opens a free exhibition around a 1776 print of the Declaration of Independence on Friday 23 October, and the Royal Parks run a guided walk through Kensington Gardens the same morning. Half term starts on Monday 26 October, so the queues will only grow. The picks come from Londonist’s guide to the week; the Greek stops are confirmed Greek List members a park walk or a few Tube stops away.

Two of them matter here. Halepi on Leinster Terrace is two minutes from Lancaster Gate, on the north edge of Kensington Gardens, and It’s All Greek To Me on Praed Street is five minutes from Paddington, five Circle line stops from South Kensington. So every museum below ends with a park walk or a short ride and a proper Greek table, which is the whole point of knowing the Greek restaurants near Kensington before the crowds arrive.

Greek restaurants near Kensington: the week at a glance

Friday 23 October: Becoming America opens at the Science Museum (free, booked) and the Hidden Stories walk leaves Kensington Gardens at 11am. Saturday 24 October: the Freddie Mercury trail opens at the V&A (free, no ticket). Any day: Es Devlin at the Design Museum, and the Natural History Museum, free and already busy.

Freddie Mercury | Splendid Things is a free trail of eight stage costumes through the V&A’s galleries, from 24 October 2026 to 17 January 2027, in what would have been his 80th birthday year. The big names are there: the Mercury Wing catsuit from the Bohemian Rhapsody era, the crown and cloak from the 1986 Magic Tour, and the monochrome outfit from an early Queen gig at Imperial College, literally around the corner on Exhibition Road. The sets are by Tom Piper, who did the Tower of London poppies and the Taylor Swift trail that packed this museum two years ago. No ticket is needed, which is exactly why the first weekend will be heaving. Go on a weekday morning.

Getting there: V&A South Kensington, Cromwell Road, SW7 2RL. South Kensington station, then the pedestrian tunnel to the museum door. Open daily, late on Fridays.

Greek stop nearby: It’s All Greek To Me on Praed Street, Paddington, W2 1NT. Five Circle line stops from South Kensington and you are at the souvlaki counter in a quarter of an hour. Gyros, grills and Greek salads, open late every night, so it works after the V&A’s Friday Late too.

Becoming America: How Science Shaped a Nation runs from 23 October 2026 to 25 April 2027. It is free, but you must book a timed slot. The centrepiece is a rare surviving Dunlap print of the Declaration of Independence from 1776, shown with Benjamin Franklin’s map of the Gulf Stream, a bald eagle watercolour once owned by George III, objects from George Washington’s own collection, and a dugout canoe made for the show by a Mashpee Wampanoag maker. A smart, grown up exhibition that opens three days before half term, so book the Friday or the following week.

Getting there: Science Museum, Exhibition Road, SW7 2DD. South Kensington station, five minutes on foot. Open 10am to 6pm; free timed tickets on sciencemuseum.org.uk.

Greek stop nearby: Halepi on Leinster Terrace, Bayswater, W2 3ET. Walk north from Exhibition Road through Kensington Gardens, past the Albert Memorial and the Round Pond to Lancaster Gate: about 25 minutes, and one of the best autumn walks in London. Halepi has served Greek and Cypriot food here for decades and opens from noon until after midnight every day.

The Royal Parks guided walk Hidden Stories of Kensington Gardens runs on Friday 23 October from 11am to 12.30pm. It covers the statues, how the royals carved the Gardens out of Hyde Park, and finishes behind the railings of the Albert Memorial for a close look at the Frieze of Parnassus. That is the Greek bit. Parnassus is the mountain above Delphi, home of the Muses, and the frieze carries 169 carved poets, painters, architects and sculptors, Homer and Pheidias, the man behind the Parthenon sculptures, among them. Londoners walk past it every day without noticing. Adults only, steep steps at the end, tickets on the Royal Parks website, with £3 places for people on Universal Credit or Pension Credit.

Getting there: Meeting point confirmed on booking. The Albert Memorial is opposite the Royal Albert Hall, ten minutes from South Kensington or High Street Kensington stations.

Greek stop nearby: Halepi, 18 Leinster Terrace, W2 3ET, is the natural lunch after this walk: follow the Long Water north to the Italian Gardens and out through Lancaster Gate, 15 to 20 minutes. Of all the Greek restaurants near Kensington Gardens it is the one you reach without leaving the park until the last two minutes.

One Tube stop west, the Design Museum on Kensington High Street has Es Devlin: Other Worlds until 4 April 2027. Devlin designed the London 2012 Closing Ceremony and stages for Beyoncé and Adele, and the show gathers thirty years of that work: a giant circular desk, a rebuilt version of her studio and the Infinite Library, built from thousands of books that go to local charities when it closes. Tickets from about £17 for adults and £8.55 for children; the permanent collection upstairs is free.

Getting there: Design Museum, 224 to 238 Kensington High Street, W8 6AG, next to Holland Park. High Street Kensington station, five minutes.

Greek stop nearby: Both Greek restaurants near Kensington in this guide are close: Halepi is a 25 minute walk north through Kensington Gardens, or two stops to Bayswater, and It’s All Greek To Me is three stops on the Circle line to Paddington.

The walk back through the Italian Gardens

Whatever you pick, finish the same way. Head into Kensington Gardens, follow the Long Water north and you reach the Italian Gardens, four stone basins with fountains that Prince Albert gave Queen Victoria in the 1860s. In late October the plane trees turn gold and the fountains catch the low sun around 4pm. Lancaster Gate station is across the road, Leinster Terrace is the next street along, and Praed Street is ten more minutes east. It is the simplest way to join the museums to the Greek restaurants near Kensington without touching the Tube.

And a few more

The Natural History Museum is free and open until 5.50pm; on half term days arrive before 10am. The Royal Albert Hall has a K-Music Festival concert on Thursday 29 October. And if you have visitors from Greece, the Circle line between Paddington and South Kensington is the cheapest tour you can give them: hotel at one end, museums at the other, and Greek restaurants near Kensington Gardens on the way back.
