Greek pianist and composer Tania Giannouli joins Norwegian trumpeter Nils Petter Molvær at Cadogan Hall as part of the EFG London Jazz Festival.
Giannouli is known for an improvisational approach that moves between contemporary classical music, jazz and experimental traditions. She has released all of her recordings through Rattle Records, the New Zealand-based art-music label.
Her discography includes Forest Stories, recorded with Portuguese wind instrumentalist Paulo Chagas; Transcendence, created with her own ensemble; Rewa, an entirely improvised collaboration with Māori musician Rob Thorne; In Fading Light, combining piano with trumpet and oud; and her 2023 release Solo.
Her album Transcendence has been recognised in Greece among the notable records of its decade. In 2024, she was also invited by Nils Frahm to contribute to the Piano Day compilation.
Nils Petter Molvær is a Norwegian trumpeter associated with the development of electronic and experimental jazz. During the 1990s, he became known for combining trumpet with electronics, effects and ambient textures.
He has recorded for ECM and composed music for films. His 1997 album Khmer became particularly influential for its fusion of jazz improvisation with electronic production.
The collaboration between Giannouli and Molvær centres heavily on improvisation. Giannouli frequently works with the internal mechanisms and strings of the piano, while Molvær processes his trumpet electronically and at times directs his sound into the piano strings themselves.
The result is music that moves freely between jazz, contemporary composition, ambient music and experimental improvisation rather than remaining within a single genre.
