Rebetiko was more than a musical genre. It was a cultural watershed: a bold field of expression that emerged from the traumatic population exchange between Greece and Turkey in the 1920s and gave voice to class oppression, female emancipation and cultural diversity at a time when any form of difference was a stigma and meant living on the margins. It carries the experiences of those who were never meant to be heard — displaced, stateless, classed, gendered, culturally hybrid — and it did so through song, through defiance, and through a specific, irreducible style. Its very sound was proof that cultures do not close in on themselves, but are built at the crossroads.
The performance draws on real stories, historical testimonies and the lives behind the songs bringing female voices to life through music, songs, movement, choreography, and storytelling transforming memory and fantasy into real action.
