The Cultural Section of the Cyprus High Commission dedicates a full November weekend to the ancient history and archaeology of Cyprus.
Based at Cyprus House, 13 St James’s Square, the Cultural Section promotes Cypriot history and culture in Britain and organises events for both the Cypriot community and the wider public.
The November programme focuses on the island’s ancient past. Saturday explores Aphrodite and her connection with Cyprus, while Sunday turns to archaeological fieldwork and the people behind the excavations.
Both events are free, but advance booking is required.
Aphrodite’s Island: The Goddess of Cyprus and Her Journey Through Antiquity
An afternoon devoted to the archaeology, mythology and cultural legacy of Aphrodite, the goddess whose story is closely connected with Cyprus.
The event examines how Aphrodite was understood in antiquity and how her image and mythology continued to develop over time.
The programme begins at 15:00, with doors opening at 14:30.
It takes place during the same period as the Ashmolean Museum’s exhibition “Aphrodite — The Making of a Goddess”, which runs in Oxford from October 2026 into 2027.

The Archive of Grigoris Antoniou & SKAMMATA
A morning devoted to archaeology, archives and documentary film.
Professor Theopisty Stylianou-Lambert presents research on Grigoris Antoniou, a Cypriot excavation foreman whose important contribution to archaeological digs on the island was largely left out of the historical record.
The programme also includes a keynote by Dr Thomas Kiely, Curator of the Cyprus Collection at the British Museum.
The documentary SKAMMATA, directed by Danae Stylianou and produced by the Department of Antiquities of Cyprus, is also screened.
The 87-minute documentary follows the people, discoveries and fieldwork behind archaeological excavations across Cyprus.
The programme includes the presentations, film screenings and discussions and runs from 11:00 until approximately 14:45.
