Discover Contemporary Greek Cinema – Beyond the Weird Wave!

An event for all cinema fans from 16 February to 17 April 2025.

The Greek Cinema of the 2000s

Greece, a country marked by its geographical distinctiveness and history of political upheaval, is full of contrasts—both breathtakingly beautiful and harshly chaotic. This duality extends to its cinema of the 2000s, a period defined by financial crises and minimal government support. During this transformative era, Greek filmmakers abandoned idealized narratives in favor of darker, introspective stories that scrutinized the societal pillars of family and state. A new wave of directors broke from tradition, exploring uncharted narrative territory and crafting films that mirrored the complexities of contemporary Greek life.

CONTEMPORARY GREEK CINEMA: BEYOND THE WEIRD WAVE

This programm consists of 9 Greek films made after 2000 and will run from February to April 2025 under the aegis of the Greek Embassy in London and the support of  the Hellenic Film & Audiovisual Centre. Each film will be screened as an evening performance and as a matinee. It will include director Q&As, panel discussions, expert introductions and special events.

A special launch event will take place on Sunday 16 February, including a screening of Alps by Yorgos Lanthimos and a panel discussion, with Dr Tonia Kazakopoulou, Dr Eleftheria Rania Kosmidou, Dr Eddie Falvey, and season curator Erifili Missiou. They will dive into Lanthimos’ work and the development of Greek cinema since the turn of the century.

The event aims to create awareness of contemporary Greek Cinema for London and international audiences and to engage the Greek diaspora. Several films are being screened for the first time in the UK and are the result of extensive research.
