If you have spent a summer in Greece, you know that no iced latte comes close to a proper freddo. The good news: these Greek cafés in London make freddo espresso and freddo cappuccino exactly the way they are made in Athens or Thessaloniki. Here is where to find them.
A freddo espresso is a double espresso shaken or blended with ice until it turns silky and slightly foamy, then poured over fresh ice. It is served sketos (no sugar), metrios (medium) or glykos (sweet). It was born in Greece in the 1990s and is now the country’s favourite summer coffee, drunk all year round.
A freddo cappuccino is a freddo espresso topped with a thick layer of cold milk foam (afrogala). The foam should be dense enough to sit on top of the coffee, not blend into it. Ask for it with or without sugar, just like the espresso version.
A frappé is made with instant coffee shaken with water, sugar and ice. A freddo is made with real espresso. If you want the classic 1990s Greek beach coffee, order a frappé; if you want a stronger, smoother coffee, order a freddo.
